A Little About Grammeno

Grammeno is an established camping situated about 5km west from the centre of Paleochora in the southwest of Crete. The southern side of the camping is right on Grammeno Beach, a wonderful, sandy beach with a sheltered bay.

There are many trees, shrubs and flowers which help to give a ‘back to nature’ feel. There is a restaurant and bar which provide meals, snacks and drinks during the main season*.

Guests often comment about the relaxing atmosphere the location provides and the restful views over the sea and wooded promontory. In winter, there are some wonderful sunrises and sunsets.

There is accommodation for every budget. Bring your own tent, motorhome or camper, rent a tent* from us or a simple cabin for two people. There are larger cabins and bungalows for families requiring more facilities and accommodation. The communal bathroom has hot showers 24/7. There are also cubicles with toilets and showers nearby. A communal kitchen with refrigerator and freezer has gas rings for cooking. Sinks for washing up are nearby as is a BBQ, outdoor seating area and vending machine*.

A large, communal room has air conditioning in the summer and a wood burning stove for the winter. There are comfortable chairs where guests can sit and chat, read or listen to music. There is also a table a chairs where guests can work in comfort. The room can also be used for meditation, Pilates or other personal fitness activities. It has also been known for there to be celebrations at Christmas and New Year.

*Available from mid-May to mid-October.

Beautiful campground in southern Crete

I’ve always liked this campground. It’s on a beautiful beach with free sunbeds and umbrellas.

Excellent restaurant on the grounds, lots of friendly cats, clean restrooms, clean showers, and more.

The only drawback is that the kitchen doesn’t open until 1:00 pm, so no breakfast available*.

We visited this campsite for a few weeks in late summer 2015.

We camped here again in our own tent for seven weeks last Autumn from the 23 September, until 5 November. It was an absolute delight. Throughout our stay, the campsite was peaceful and quiet, the showers and toilets were clean and the beach was often almost deserted.

The weather was warm and sunny with temperatures into mid-high twenties with only a day or so of rain ( and one storm).

Although the bar and restaurants were closing down as it was the end of the season, there are plenty of places around and about to eat and drink.

We had a pitch right by the beach with plenty of shade so we went to sleep and awoke to the sound of the sea.

We returned for three weeks 24 May-14 June 2017 and are here as I type. This time we are staying in one of the wooden tents they have available for hire. This provides us with two beds and a fridge. Sheets have been changed regularly. These are provided but not towels. The huts are quite spacious inside, but are not ensuite. However showers and toilets are close by. You also get a bench and table. We are thinking of hiring one for our regular autumn visit instead of bringing our tent.

I must also mention the campsite bar and restaurant where we have eaten some excellent food - there is a wide variety of Greek dishes and other snacks available. I can particularly recommend the dishes of the day. e.g. briam, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, lamb stew, boureki.

All staff- from waiters and bar staff, the lady who changes our sheets, and the management team have been friendly and helpful and we would like to thank them for making our stay a great one.
